Background
As Germany rides her grim whirlwind to destruction, the
gallant airmen of the Luftwaffe continue their epic struggle
against the relentless tide engulfing their Fatherland.
With courage and selflessness, these grave men strove for
conditional peace in the last months of the war, doing their
duty with honour and dedication to relieve the suffering of
their people.
None more than the line commanders understood the sacrifice
that Germany's young must undergo in their struggle for survival.
For they must also bear the added burden of ordering these
young men into battle, to accept the awful responsibility
for these lives in their care, and be condemned to waiting
for those who will never return.
In this painting, Kommandeur Gunther Rall counts home his
pilots of JG-11, echoing a scene that was repeated hourly
during the last chaotic days of the Reich. During the signing
of the prints, General Rall remarked how poignantly Mike Howard
has captured the very essence and atmosphere of those days.
The Companion Print entitled "The Stowaway" depicts
a story often recounted by the redoubtable Gunther Rall of
the occasion when, after takeoff, he was astonished to see
a rather distressed mouse peering at him from the instrument
panel of his Me-109. The fate of the mouse remains unknown.
